Remember Alan ‘Fluff’ Freeman, the Radio 1 DJ? When he first came over to Britain from Australia, he heard one of his DJ colleagues playing a Frank Sinatra record before announcing in a very formal voice “That was Frank Sinatra on a gramophone recording”.

Fluff was horrified at someone being so pompous about pop music – it was supposed to be lively and exciting.
